Reads GEDCOM 5.x and 7 files, a GEDZIP (.gdz) or a zip holding one, a Gramps tree (.gramps) and a RootsMagic tree (.rmtree). Checked against the published GEDCOM 7.0 specification. Pictures inside a zip or beside a tree are not shown here.

What is a GEDCOM file?

GEDCOM (a .ged file) is how family-tree programs hand a tree to another program. It is plain text that holds the people, their families, dates, places and notes, and the sources behind them. Most programs offer it under Export or Download: Ancestry, MyHeritage, RootsMagic, Gramps and Family Tree Maker among them. Most still write GEDCOM 5.5.1; GEDCOM 7 is the current standard.

Not sure how to get a file out of your program? Each program's own steps.
