AncestralFire

AncestralFire · Get your file out

How to export your tree from Gramps.

In Gramps, choose Family Trees, then Export (Ctrl+E, or Command+E on a Mac), and follow the Export Assistant. Gramps suggests its own Gramps XML format for a full copy of your tree, and AncestralFire reads that file directly. GEDCOM is there too, but Gramps warns that some of its data can't be written as GEDCOM.

The steps, from the Gramps manual

  1. Choose the menu Family Trees, then Export, or press Ctrl+E (Command+E on a Mac). The Export Assistant opens.
  2. Choose the output format. The list includes GEDCOM and Gramps XML (family tree), which is the default.
  3. Set the options: the filters and privacy settings (for example, do not include records marked private, and how to treat living people), and the person filter if you want only part of the tree.
  4. Select Next, check the final confirmation page, and the export is performed. You can go Back at any time and change a choice.

Good to know.

Then bring it in.

Choose the .gramps file for a full copy, or the .ged file. Open it on the free GEDCOM page: your file is read in your browser, so you can look it over first. Then press Bring it into AncestralFire, and the file goes with you to make your account.
