AncestralFire · Get your file out
How to export a GEDCOM file from RootsMagic.
In RootsMagic, with your database open, choose the Files page, then Export Data, then GEDCOM File, pick where to save it, and click OK. A RootsMagic tree (a .rmtree file) can also be given to AncestralFire directly, but that has only been tried on RootsMagic 8-era files, so the GEDCOM file is the sure way, especially from RootsMagic 11.
The steps, from RootsMagic's help
- With the database that holds the information you want to export open, select the Files page, then Export Data, then GEDCOM File.
- Select the location for the new GEDCOM file from the Default Folder, Recent Folders, or by clicking Browse for Destination and choosing a folder.
- Enter the name of the GEDCOM file you wish to create.
- On the GEDCOM Export dialog, choose People to export (the entire database, a selected list of people, or a named group), Data to export (notes, sources, addresses, multimedia links and more), and Privacy options.
- Click OK to create the GEDCOM file.
Good to know.
- RootsMagic's privacy options let you substitute the word “Living” for the names of living people, and leave out private facts and private notes. Choose them if the file will go to anyone else.
- AncestralFire can also read a RootsMagic tree directly (a .rmtree file), but that was built and tried on RootsMagic 8-era files. RootsMagic says its version 11 has the same .rmtree extension but a different file format, so from RootsMagic 11 use the GEDCOM file.
Then bring it in.
Choose the .ged file you saved. Open it on the free GEDCOM page: your file is read in your browser, so you can look it over first. Then press Bring it into AncestralFire, and the file goes with you to make your account.
